by Pedro Calderón de la Barca
New translation by Harley Erdman and Lauryn E. Sasso
directed by Kara-Lynn Vaeni
dramaturgy by Talya Kingston
“Sleeping, I live things,
and waking, I dream things.”
I was the production dramaturg for the world premiere of a new translation of the most famous play of the Spanish Golden Age. In keeping with the College-aged cast, this translation was energetic, youthful and poetic, but "playable". The female characters of Rosaura and Estrella were subtly empowered. I worked with Harley Erdman and Lauryn Sasso on some script shifts in rehearsal, and closely with Kara-Lynn Vaeni on a highly physical ensemble performance that remains one of my best production experiences to date.
Performers: Kate Mettam, Jonathan Graffam, Randolph Paulsen, Maxfield Raynolds, Kelby Akin, Lindsey Grace Robitaille, Tom Adrian Villalobos,
Scott Braidman, Rafael Jordan, Claire Kavanah, Michelle Whitaker, Jeremy Browne, Douglas Johnson and Diana Sanchez.
Scenic Design: Amy B. Davis
Costume Design: June Gaeke & Bethany Marx
Lighting Design: Lauren Anders Brown
Sound Design: Margo Cadell
Fight Choreographer: Jeff Lord
Stage Manager: Meghan C. Kane
