by Eve Ensler
World Premiere production directed by Michael Wilson
Dramaturgy by Talya Kingston
"You don't understand that this happened to us - to real people... we weren't fighting for centuries
that's how we've been summed up and dismissed - you want it to be logical,
you want us to be different than you so you can convince yourself that it won't happen there where you are."
Necessary Targets takes place in a Bosnian refugee camp in 1996 and is based on the stories of women that Eve Ensler met there. However, Ensler's own position is also examined through the American psychologist J.S. and Journalist Melissa. The dramaturgy involved research into the Bosnian conflict and politics, outreach to the Hartford Bosnian community and giving notes on a developing script. In addition, we were rehearsing in the weeks and months immediately following the 9/11 attacks which had changed our relationship to the story we were telling.
